Development of Biodynamic CranioSacral Therapy:

Cranial motion was discovered by a young osteopathy student, named William Sutherland. Upon observing a disarticulated temporal bone, he exclaimed to himself, "Beveled like the gills of a fish and indicating a primary respiratory mechanism." This led to a lifelong study and appreciation of the workings of a primary life force within the human body, which he called Primary Respiration.

Taught that the cranium was fused as an adult, he could not understand why, given the fact that the sutures of the skull seemed to allow for movement. He reasoned that if the cranial bones were designed to move, then restriction to that movement would result in some sort of abnormal function or pathology. As he delved deeper into his exploration of the cranial bones, he discovered movement wasn't confined to the cranial bones. Moreover, it wasn't just bony movement, but a rhythmic impulse that could be palpated by sensitive hands throughout the body. He realized that he was sensing the dynamics of a powerful physiological force, and that this force was responsible for ordering and maintaining health and vitality within the human body mind. He called this system the Primary Respiratory Mechanism or Involuntary Mechanism, an Involuntary System of breathing in tissues allowing all of the cells the body to function to their optimal ability.

When Sutherland first began working with cranial bony movement, he used biomechanical language to describe what he perceived. Later as he refined his perception and palpatory skills, he sensed more subtle, tide-like forces and rhythms, fluid fluctuations and related tissue motility. By the end of his career, Sutherland shifted his language from a biomechanical orientation to a biodynamic one. From an analysis of bony motion and technique to an orientation to the inherent forces that facilitate healing. He called this inherent life force of the body, the "Breath of Life", a divine presence that animated the inner rhythmic motion that creates order and healing within the human system. Sutherland believed that the potency of the "Breath of Life" is an expression of the Intelligence of life itself and could be effectively employed by practitioners for promoting health.
